How A Trainer Sets Goals For Her Clients

Have you set your fitness goals for 2017? 

 

New Year resolutions get a bad rap because they tend to fall by the wayside, despite the best intentions at the start. The main reasons people fail to follow through with them most of the time are:

 

ONE: they don’t have specific goals written down and,

TWO: they don’t have an action plan.

 

If there is anything you want to change about your life─your health, weight, relationships, job or living situation─planning will help you not only to succeed but do it without becoming overwhelmed. 

 

In my next several blogs, I want to share some actionable tips with you on how to set and achieve your fitness aspirations. If you want, you can use the questions for any other goal setting. 

 

Are you ready to do whatever it takes to get where you want to be? 

 

The number one “rule” of goal setting is that your goal needs to be ground shaking, life changing important to you. Your goal needs to be a “MUST” not a “maybe.” By answering the following questions, you can set a firm intention. 

 

1. What is your goal? 

2. Why is it so important for you to reach this goal? 

 

Take your time with this part. Take the time to think about it and write it down. Putting it on paper will give you more clarity and make it real.  

 

Now, let’s go to the next step. Adjust your goals and make them SMART. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. 

  • Specific: Saying that you want to feel better, or healthier, is not enough. A specific goal is “I want to lose weight.” 

  • Measurable: How much weight do you want to lose or how many dress sizes or inches do you want to drop? 

  • Attainable: Losing 1 pound a week is an attainable goal. When you try to lose it faster, you may not be able to keep up with the exercise program or diet. 

  • Realistic: Do you have the time to do everything you need to do (and change) to slim down? Or do you need to address your goal in smaller increments to make it easier on yourself? 

 

  • Timely: Give yourself a deadline that will keep you motivated.

Remember, progress not perfection. If you fall off the wagon during the process, skip the guilt -  take a few deep breaths, and start again.
